This painting depicts the opening shot of the last epic battle of the HMS Revenge in 1591 off the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. It depics a typical racing built, Elizabethan galleon, made from 500 tons of English oak at it's glorious best. The 'Revenge' was under the command of Sir Richard Grenville, with a crew of 180, (although 80 of these were sick & below decks) who single handedly took on the Spanish fleet of 53 galeions, and after a 12 hour battle the Spanish lost 6 ships. Sadly the Revenge was lost at sea on it's way to Spain in a storm, and Grenville died of his wounds, as did most of the crew.
