Schooners have been successfully fishing off the coast of New England since the 1700s and there has been very little change in their construction through to the 1900s.
This is a painting of these schooners in Gloucester Harbour drying their sails in the early winter of 1880. Inspiration for this painting came from an old black & white photo taken by Martha Harvey, who captured this scene with her old box camera. I have placed her in the picture as a tribute to her historical coverage of this era.
